I am happy to announce the official launch of Basho Academy. The Basho Academy provides a platform to educate users about our family of Riak products. This will help expose a broader audience of developers and operators to the powerful tools already being successfully deployed by world-class enterprises such as Best Buy, Bet365, Comcast, OpenX, and Uber, to name a few.
Since Riak TS is our most recent release, it will be the initial focus of the Basho Academy. At launch we have two introductory courses for Riak TS. One is geared towards developers and covers all the basics required to begin creating your Time Series / IoT application. A second course is focused on the core skills an operator or system administrator will need to be familiar with to set up a production-grade Riak TS installation.
While I’m personally excited about the work that has been done, and have already received some very positive feedback, this is only the beginning. Our Technical Publications team has plans to release additional courses covering Riak TS and Apache Spark integration, as well as courses for Riak KV. However, that only scratches the surface of what we have planned.
Within the Basho Services department we have decades of combined experience working with Riak in business-critical scenarios. We’ve found it incredibly important when working with distributed systems to expand our knowledge beyond the options, commands, configurations and tools that are available. It is necessary to understand the computational costs, latency implications, resiliency trade offs and other considerations that help one to reason upon what is the best course of action to take in a given scenario. Acquiring this depth of understanding can be a challenge. We want to help. So, as we build out our library of courses at Basho Academy, we will go beyond “How” and seek to also dive into the theory of “Why.”
It was important to me that we make this valuable education available to as many people as possible. The Basho Academy is, and always will be, free to access. Setting up your account is as easy as name, email, and password. Once you’ve logged in, you will be able to explore the courses. The format is text-based, self-paced, tutorial style lessons. In the future we will be expanding this to include video, questions, and a few other learning tools we have brewing.
