  • Jon Meredith

    Platform Engineering Manager

    Jon MeredithPlatform Engineering Manager

    Jon joined Basho in March 2010. He has spent the bulk of his career programming data stores and data processing. After working on hierarchical databases, SQL interpreters and column stores he's moved on to Dynamo-like systems. He even used a relational database once.

    Jon studied at the University of East Anglia and UC Davis with a 1st class honours degree in Electronic Engineering.

  • Russell Brown

    Russell BrownEngineer

    Russell Brown is an Engineer at Basho Technologies. He got his start with BASIC and copying machine code game listings as a kid after his dad bought an Atari 400 for an OU degree in Computer Science. His first paid programming gig was at Freeserve during the free ISP and Broadband boom and has since worked on various distributed systems, including the UK cash machine network. Russell got his first taste of Erlang on his honeymoon in 2007 and, in early 2011, was recruited by Basho to work on Riak and the Riak Java Client. He's passionate about technically-sound software, strong ale, and cycling.

  • Sean Cribbs

    Sean CribbsSoftware Engineer

    Sean joined Basho in March 2010 after three years as a freelance web developer, in the course of which he worked on numerous startups and open-source projects, including the popular Radiant content management system which is built with Ruby on Rails. Prior to that, he studied Music Theory and Composition at the graduate level and directed a chorus after receiving bachelors degrees in Computer Science and Music from the University of Tulsa.

    Sean brings his practical experience in building scalable web applications, passion for educating others, and broad theoretical knowledge of technical topics to the role of Software Engineer. He can often be found speaking at conferences and other events on Riak, and enjoys playing the piano in his free time.

  • Reid Draper

    Reid Draper joined Basho in September 2011. Before Basho he was a software engineer at The Echo Nest, a music intelligence company. At The Echo Nest, Reid built several core architectural components and lead the data ingestion team. Reid has a degree in Music Engineering and Computer Science from University of Miami.

  • Bryan Fink

    Bryan FinkPrincipal Software Engineer

    Bryan joined Basho in February of 2008. Since then he has been an integral part of the software team. Before Basho, Bryan worked for software companies in the financial, hardware testing, and telecom industries. Bryan graduated from MIT in 2004.

    When he’s not coding on Webmachine and Riak, Bryan brews beer, cooks, drums, and makes things out of wood.

  • Scott Lystig Fritchie

    Scott Lystig FritchieSenior Software Engineer

    Scott Lystig Fritchie met his first UNIX system in 1986 and has almost never met one since that he didn’t like. A career detour as a UNIX systems administrator got him neck-deep in messaging systems, e-mail and Usenet News. He rediscovered full-time programming while at Sendmail, Inc., where a colleague introduced him to Erlang in 2000. His world hasn’t been the same since.

    His last gig was working on storage infrastructure for multi-media messaging systems (MMS) for mobile phones, then supporting 3D gaming on mobile handsets, then the storage layers for a large Webmail system in Japan (now storing many hundreds of millions of messages).

  • Jeff Massung

    Jeff joined Basho in August of 2011. He previously came from 8 years in the the gaming industry as a Lead Programmer for Disney and THQ. Before that, Jeff programmed embedded micro controllers for the oil and gas pipeline industries. In his spare time he writes interpreters and compilers in esoteric languages like Haskell. He loves hiking, skiing, and playing in the dirt with his daughter. Jeff studied Computer Science at the University of Utah.

    Kelly McLaughlinSenior Software Engineer

    Kelly joined Basho in January 2011. Before joining the Basho team he was a software engineer at Absolute Performance where he worked on scalability and performance enhancements of their commercial monitoring system. Prior to that he spent five years doing research and development at the National Security Agency.

    Kelly holds degrees in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University and Middle Tennessee State University.

  • Jared Morrow

    Jared MorrowSoftware Engineer

    Jared joined Basho in April of 2011. Before joining the Basho team he was a software engineer at Schneider Electric where he moved from embedded application development to tools development. It was there where he discovered a love for functional languages and where he installed his first Riak cluster. Prior to that he was an embedded software engineer at Qualcomm and Northrop Grumman.

    Jared graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Computer Science & Engineering.

  • Steve Vinoski

    Steve VinoskiArchitect

    Steve has had a long career centered around distributed systems development. Before joining Basho in June 2011, he worked on a variety of software and hardware projects and systems over the years, including cable and internet video delivery systems, enterprise integration and middleware systems, RESTful web development, a variety of open source projects, distributed objects systems, engineering workstation development, and integrated circuit development and testing. As chief architect and vice president of platform technologies for IONA Technologies, where he worked 1996-2007, he led the development of IONA's Adaptive Runtime Technology (ART) that came to underpin IONA's successful middleware and integration products.

    Steve is a frequent conference speaker and also an author of numerous papers, magazine columns and articles, and a distributed objects book. He currently writes the "Functional Web" column for IEEE Internet Computing magazine.

    In September 2010 Justin joined Basho, accepting the challenge to help build the best customer service ever to be offered by a software company.

    Previous to Basho, Justin spent 3 years at Engine Yard. There he helped customers scale their Ruby on Rails applications, and spent his final year managing the Eastern US and European Support teams. The focus on service of the Support teams Justin worked with contributed to the 400+% customer growth during those 3 years at Engine Yard.

    Greg Burd joined Basho in July 2011. Prior to Basho Greg spent nearly ten years as the product manager for Berkeley DB at Sleepycat Software and then within Oracle. Previously Greg has worked for NeXT Computer, Sun Microsystems and KnowNow. Greg has long been a avid supporter of open source software.

  • Sowjanya Kamatam

    Sowjanya joined Basho in December 2011 after completing postgraduate studies in Computer Science from Boise state university during which she was deeply involved with research on analysis of randomness in cryptographic algorithms. She discovered Riak during her work on various projects on distributed systems. Prior to joining Basho, she worked as a freelance developer in Java, C, C++ and .Net.

    Sowjanya's interests include performing arts and she has given numerous Indian classical/ contemporary dance performances.

    Bryce joined Basho in September 2011. Prior to Basho, Bryce worked as an independent Rails developer, working with startups and established businesses on everything from AJAX to ZFS. Along the way, he developed a fondness for presentations and computing competitions.

    Bryce has a degree in Computer Science from the University of South Florida.

  • Tryn Mirell

    Tryn joined Basho in January 2012. Prior to that, he worked on diverse projects such as debugging credit card transaction processing, reverse engineering network protocols and writing simulators, hacking on embedded Linux devices, developing API stacks for routers and IPSs, and writing automation code for testing web pages.

    Tryn devotes most of his free time to petting cats, yoga, and improv.

  • John Newman

    John NewmanDesigner / UX Developer

    John joined the team in August 2011 with the purpose of consolidating the visual identity of the Basho brand. His main focus is the design and development of Basho’s visual interfaces and various print media.

    Before joining Basho, John worked as a Creative Engineer for IRBsearch, a leading public data provider, where he first fell in love with software and functional languages. He also worked as a freelance designer/front-end developer and has participated in various, small, open-source projects. John obtained a degree in International Affairs from Florida State University and spends most of his free time with his wife and two daughters.

  • Daniel Reverri

    Daniel joined Basho in June 2010 after becoming actively involved in the Basho community. For the year prior to joining Basho he was building applications using many of the tools built by Basho including Rebar, Webmachine, and most importantly Riak. Before that, Daniel worked in the support and services groups of SugarCRM and Parametric Technology Corporation.

    Daniel graduated from Boston University in 2004 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering.

    Justin Shoffstall started with Basho in November, 2011 following a stint in developing custom software in Java, JavaScript, Python, and Clojure. Before that, he worked as a Systems and Network Administrator for various ISPs, banks, and manufacturing facilities. Justin brings extensive experience as a problem-solver in mission-critical production environments to his role as Developer Advocate.

    When at home, Justin divides his time between his family and his bass guitar.

    Brian joined Basho in April 2012. Prior to Basho, Brian worked as an independent mobile and web developer focused on content management platforms for higher education clients. Brian has been a long time supporter of open source software since 1993, when he downloaded Linux onto multiple floppy disks via 9600bps modem at an impromptu nerd camp.

    Brian enjoys longboarding and likes to spend free time with his family.

    Brian Sparrow joined Basho in February 2012. Prior to Basho, Brian worked as a software engineer for ARINC where he realized the importance of highly available, distributed systems while managing large airline networks and databases. Previously Brian worked at Mi-Corporation and GE Healthcare as well as contributing to various Android projects. When Brian isn't coding, reading, or brewing beer, he can be found drumming all over MD with various acts.

    Brian received his BE in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 2005.

    Joe joined Basho in October of 2011 after working on a Riak-backed project at his previous place of employment. While working on that project, Joe realized how much smoother the process could have been if a consultant from Basho had been a part of the application design process.

    When the opportunity presented itself for Joe to take on that very responsibility as a a Basho employee, he jumped at the chance. Joe enjoys working with a variety of languages and technologies and is psyched about learning something new at Basho literally every day.

    Joe earned his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Northwestern University, and his Master's degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

    At home, Joe has a wife, a daughter, a son, a computer, and an electric guitar (or four). He can usually be found interacting with at least one of those things.

  • Justin Fine

    Justin Fine joined Basho October 2011 from the world of government contracting. After graduating from PSU in 2006 with a degree in applied math he went to work for a consulting firm called Detica in London. A short stent in the sales side of the company stateside then led him to the National Security Agency for 3 years working in cloud computing and distributed algorithm development, mostly in Telecommunications. Seeking constant stimulation Justin then pursued a Cyber Security role at Booz Allen Hamilton where he led a team of people developing advanced analytics using the cloud and different distributed highly scalable databases.

    Justin is high energy, loves a good scotch, a good hookah and thinking up projects to work on in his free time.

  • Randy Secrist

    Randy SecristConsulting Engineer

    Prior to joining Basho in October 2011, Randy worked as a Senior Software Engineer in GE Healthcare's Advanced Technology Group. There he was deep into the Java threading model working on a near real time medical rule engine. Randy also investigated distributed messaging systems (specifically RabbitMQ) which is where he discovered Riak.

    Randy enjoys the process of building products that become mature, stable and predictable. Riak has rekindled his interest in database systems and he looks forward to solving a new class of problems using NoSQL databases.

    Randy graduated from Utah State University with a degree in Computer Science and minor in Political Science.

  • Reem Bazzari

    Reem BazzariDirector of Marketing Programs

    Reem Bazzari is the Marketing Programs Director at Basho. She is responsible for designing, executing and measuring marketing programs across multiple channels. Reem works with her team on the definition and continuous refinement of internal marketing processes and technologies, and the ongoing development and promotion of compelling marketing content in support of marketing and sales.

    Reem joined Basho from SugarCRM where she worked on developing product training and demonstrations, nurturing leads, as well as helping to guide SugarCRM’s product and competitive positioning. Previously, Reem helped to launch Sugar Exchange, SugarCRM’s commercial marketplace for partner extensions. Prior to SugarCRM, Reem worked in various marketing roles in the solar panel manufacturing and distribution industries.

  • Mel Boulos

    Mel Boulos joined Basho in 2011. As part of the Sales team, his primary role is to assist prospects and customers in analyzing, proving and building NoSQL solutions. Mel comes to Basho having spent a number of years in the Postgres space. Mel has worked in the IT industry for over 13 years. Prior to entering that industry, Mel served 8 years in the US Army as a Military Police Officer.

  • Rich Dill

    Rich joined Basho in 2012. As a member of the Solutions Engineering Team he is responsible for giving technical sales presentations, answering technical questions from potential clients, and analyzing and comparing product technical features.

    He comes to Basho with a wide range of experience in the high tech marketplace as a Sales & Solutions Engineer, Consultant, Product Manager, Program Manager, Technical Director, Technical Evangelist, and Systems Architect. He has designed, built, and sold enterprise software and solutions around the world in commercial and government sectors. One of his favorite jobs was working on the Space Shuttle Fuel Cell program. He has reputation as a customer centric team player who helps the customer and his team be successful. He is also known as someone who always seems to wear multiple "hats" juggling multiple roles and projects at the same time.

    Rich is also the president of his town's cable access station. While he is known as a technology expert today, he got his start as a writer, director, and producer of theater and film.

  • JP Flores

    JP Flores joined Basho in June of 2011. As a member of the sales team, he is responsible for developing business in the Southeast and Central regions of the US and also supports Basho's international sales efforts. He has over 15 years of direct sales, channel, and sales leadership experience in the information technology industry.

    Before coming to Basho, JP was a key member of the IT security sales organization at Verizon Business. Previously, he was a manager in the channel strategy organization at USinternetworking (now AT&T), helping to develop and mature strategic partnerships for USI's managed services business. He has held sales and sales leadership positions at DIGEX (now VerizonBusiness), a pioneer of web and application hosting services, and PSINet, an early global Internet Service Provider. He studied economics at Stanford. When not evangelizing Riak, JP enjoys cooking and is an avid cyclist.

  • Randy Hamilton

    Prior to joining Basho, Randy was co-founder of beRelevant, a next-generation SaaS-based crowdsourcing platform based on beRelevant’s patent-pending qual-to-quant technology. Before beRelevant Randy held several executive management positions including Director of Marketing at Satmetrix, VP Engineering at Match.com, VP Engineering and Operations at Release Software, and VP Engineering and CTO at OneChannel.com, as well as Sr. Engineering Manager at Sun Microsystems. Randy holds several patents in communications, technology, and backend architectures. Randy received his Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University.

  • Mark Phillips

    Mark has been with Basho since early 2008 and is now the Community Manager. He is responsible for engaging with and growing a powerful network of developers and building out the collaborative infrastructure around Riak and Basho’s other open source technologies.

    Mark is proud to be an alumnus of Syracuse University, where he studied Political Science and la langue française.

  • Jim Rushforth

    Jim joined Basho in Oct 2011. He has spent the last 15 years in wide variety of roles including sales & solutions engineer, professional services consultant, channel strategy consultant, product manager, developer, and technical trainer. He's worked at companies such as Akamai, Cisco, Accenture, Openwave Systems, Fair Isaac and Keynote Systems, etc.

    What made Jim a great fit for Basho was his passion and experience with distributed systems and databases as well as experience in scaling organizations. He was one of the first 50 people at Akamai and joined as the first professional services consultant. He helped build the professional services team as well as grow the organization to more than 1500 people in the first 2 years. He also was data warehousing developer at Accenture.

    Jim has a bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He has also done graduate work in Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts/Lowell and Finance & Accounting studies at Harvard University.

International Operations

  • Matt Heitzenroder

    Matt HeitzenroderDirector of Technical Operations

    Matt joined us as the inital Account Manager in December 2010. Previously he had worked for five and half years with SugarCRM in various customer support and professional service roles. His career has put him at the interesction of service and software for numerous start-ups and he continues that focus at Basho.

    Matt is a developer at heart and you can often find him hacking away on various Erlang projects in his free time. And if he's not doing that, he's probably somewhere at sea either sailing or scuba diving. Oh and he's probably best known as "roder".

  • Ian Plosker

    Technical Operations Lead

    Ian PloskerTechnical Operations Lead

    Ian joined Basho in July 2011. Prior to Basho, Ian lead the development of web applications focused on competitive intelligence gathering. Ian stumbled into the world of alternative databases and Erlang when building a large scale bioinformatics platform. Ian brings his experience in these fields, as well as interests in Economics, Finance, and the Sciences to the Developer Advocate team.

    Ian received a B.A. in Natural Sciences from the Johns Hopkins University.

  • Maureen Sullivan

    Maureen SullivanExec. Assistant & Office Manager

    Maureen supports C-level officers, managers and all distributed developers. She coordinates on-boarding for new hires, travel and office management and has been known to leap over tall buildings in a single bound.

    Maureen has been with Basho since April of 2008; prior to joining our Team, she was with several start-ups and also at The Kennedy School supporting John Kenneth Galbraith.
